Windows can be a thing of beauty, and they also let a lot of light into our life. However, they also can let a lot of heat and energy out of our lives. And glass is just a really good conductor, which is bad because that means heat can travel right through it. That’s very expensive heat in the wintertime. And then in the summertime the heat from outside will come through to run up your air- conditioning bills. What you can do is install storm windows.
Now storm windows are a little bit on the expensive side, but there is a way to do it with just a sheet like this. You see when you put a storm window up, that second pane of glass cuts out 50% of the heat transfer. And even if you don’t have a piece of glass, if you just have something like this it’s going to work out. Now this is a kit that you can get, very inexpensive, and easy to do. The first thing we do is we put the tape in place. This is a special double-sided tape that comes with the kit. Now what you do is, you just run it along and stick the sticky side down and the next thing you do after you get it all the way around, is you come back and peel the rest of it off. Well, next we want to put this piece of plastic on and I know you think it’s going to end up looking sort of Mickey Mouse and wrinkle. And it will be, but we’ll show you how to remedy that, too. I told you it was going to be wrinkled and we can solve that problem. Now what we need is the hairdryer. The heat from the hairdryer is going to cause it to shrink up and pull everything real tight. It’s sort of like shrink wrap for your windows. Incidentally, when winter is over, if you want to, take this down so you can have fresh air. It’ll peel right off. And there are some other ways you can do it. You can either put it on the outside frame and all around. You can even put in on the frame of the window screen, if you wanted to do that. It can save you money and it’ll pay for itself.
